Artist Block is Real

Artist Block is Real

As with a writer with writer’s block, an artist can have a problem with creative flow as well. Artists deal with this artist block in a multitude of ways.

For me, shopping for a new tube of paint is sometimes all I need to put me back in the mood. Sizing up the variety of colors hanging in the row of paints gets my mind racing with what color combinations I like best that day.

Other times, just cleaning my work space is enough to reset my goal of painting that day. I throw away old trash bags that I use as table cloths after putting my supplies away. I throw away cardboard that I have cut to spread paint or cups I have to stamps circles on my work. I dust all my surface and take inventory of my supplies.

If this is not enough to reset my creative mood, I turn to inspiration. I will watch tutorials, browse artist groups, or look at online feeds with artwork. Sometimes a new process or new way of looking at something is all I need to kick things up a notch in the studio.

If all else fails, maybe it is my body that needs to reset. Taking a break to garden or swim outdoors gives me a healthy dose of fresh air and sunshine. Who doesn’t feel better after spending some time doing the things they love. Have a great week everyone!
